Objective:
By the end of this training, technicians will understand the significance of ladder safety and how to safely use a ladder to reduce the risk of injury. Technicians will be able to identify compromised ladders, recognize physical defects, and use a ladder correctly.
Overview:
Ladder accidents make up a significant portion of job-related injuries and Workers' Compensation claims. Using a ladder correctly is critical to maintaining safety and ensuring timely job completion. This lesson covers how to efficiently use a ladder, properly set up ladders, and avoid exceeding a ladder's load limit. Safety is no accident.
Ladder Safety Guidelines:
Prioritize Safety:
If you do not feel safe, do not use the ladder.
Inspect Ladders Before Use:
Ensure the steps are securely attached to rungs and side rails.
Verify the safety feet are not missing.
Check that rungs are free of oil, grease, or other slippery substances.
Do not use painted ladders unless for identification purposes.
Proper Usage:
Use ladders for climbing only; avoid misuse as workbenches, braces, or other unintended purposes.
Always face the ladder when ascending or descending.
Avoid carrying items in your hands while climbing; maintain a secure grip.
Keep three points of contact (two feet and one hand) at all times.
Set Up Safely:
Barricade doorways or post warning signs if a ladder is placed over a door.
Use appropriate ladder size for the job.
Ensure proper footwear is worn.
Environmental Awareness:
Check overhead for power lines or light fixtures.
Avoid using ladders in strong winds.
Post-Use Safety:
Secure ladders to the wall with a ratchet strap to prevent falls, as outlined in the Warehouse Safety lesson.
Step Ladders:
Do not stand on the top two steps or platform attachments.
Lock the spreader hinges before use.
Ensure the ladder is stable on level ground and does not wobble.
Do not place items on ladder rungs or the top step.
Extension or Straight Ladders:
Consult a supervisor before using an extension or straight ladder.
Verify safety latches are engaged and ensure the ladder extends three feet above the elevated surface.
Secure the ladder to a supporting object to prevent movement.
Do not use if the ladder is missing non-skid safety feet.
Avoid tying ladders together for longer sections.
Maintain the proper angle: the base should be 1/4 of the ladder's total height away from the wall.
